This channel is dedicated mostly to the craft and practice of kendo and iaido, two related forms of Japanese martial arts involving the sword.
At our dojo, in addition to kendo, we practice a classical iaido style (koryu) called Musoshinden Ryu, as well as the standardized iaido curriculum set by the All Japan Kendo Federation (Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei).
I am a 6th dan in kendo and 6th dan in iaido, and I have won the All U.S. Iaido National Championships three times in the 4th dan-and-above division, and once in the 4th and 5th dan division, most recently in 2019.
Dojo etiquette disclaimer: If some of the things I describe in my videos differ from what your sensei tells you, you should of course follow your own sensei's instructions.

Hikitate geiko is a way of practicing that higher ranking members of the dojo should become familiar with. The literal translation of hikitate is to “pull up” or “pull up to stand.” Figuratively, it has a lot of meanings, but one of the most pertinent to kendo is to encourage someone or raise their spirit. is it possible to fix a lose blade?
It kinda depends on the sword and why it's loose. Are you sure it's a shinken and not a decorative sword?
@@PaulHBShin I'm sure that it isn't a decorative sword
@@sprout9297 Have you tried disassembling the sword as per the instructions in the video? Does the sword have a mekugi?
try car wax
What school of kendo / iaido do you practice?
Are you referring to the dojo? Or the ryuha?
Thank you for that gentle lesson, Shin Sensei.
Nice video
I definitely feel better and get less injuries stretching before squash. I think it's because I have to reach very far in squash. I also need to warm up. I always get injured if I don't stretch though. For water polo I think warming up is super super important. For kendo I feel I want to warm up but my dojo only does static stretches 😁 Sometimes one guy does some hayasuburi by himself. I don't know, I'm still very very new to kendo.
Do what works for you. This video is just a reference point on what the scientific literature says.
I got the painful big toe crack! Amazing how there's a specific video for this problem! For kendo!
Hello sir, i have a katana but i dont know whether it is real or fake.
Where did you acquire it?
@@PaulHBShin it was belonged to my late brother. Now, i dont know what to do with it. He never shared with me how he acquired the sword before. I'm from east asia.
@@user-zt8ud3nd3t If you can connect with a local appraiser, that would be the surest way to get some info on it. But be aware of appraisers who might potentially lowball the value just to make an offer to buy it. Besides, if it has sentimental value, who may just want to hang onto it whether it's real or fake.
@@PaulHBShin thank you, sir.
Thanks for the videos. Love your work..
Hi Mr. Shin. Thanks for your videos, I have learned a lot from them to reinforce what I learn in classes. Question for you or anyone that can answer - I’ve noticed that over time (and sometimes even with a new shinai), the bamboo slats begin to separate from each other, leaving some mm of space between. Sometimes it is across the length of the shinai. Other times, it happens more in a particular place, especially the widest part. (I’ve heard this called either “do” or “harishufa”?) Is this a problem for safety, performance, or longevity of the shinai? If it is, is there a way to fix it? Even if it isn’t a problem I’d still like to be able to fix it. In my opinion it looks slovenly, aesthetically speaking. Thanks!
Thank you so much!!!!
this finally helped me! thank you
🙏
not the kendo i'm used to, but still very interesting
I'm certain the answer will be something along the. lines of "that's what you get for buying cheap equipment". A more helpful answer would be appreciated. While my katana (not cheap) is in fine condition, my to is a rattle trap, and.appears to have no megugi. There is a hole where one would expect the megugi to be, and there is what appears to be a second megugi, but only on one side and not one opposite. Anyone ever have this issue?
If it's not the mekugi that's holding the handle secure to the tang, then do you know what's securing the handle in place?
@@PaulHBShin I’m honestly unsure. I think it would be the other, one-sided mekugi as I don’t see anything else that would be. I will do a quick video and post on my RUclips page, showing you what I’m seeing and maybe you can offer some guidance.
@@PaulHBShin I posted the video on my RUclips

Thanks for a very helpful video
Eight years ago, but still helping people.
Easy!
Sir I want to thank you for sharing this very valuable information.
Been suffering left arm tennis elbow after a few weeks of daily one armed suburi. Not been able to shift the damn thing for 9-10 months, even after weighted wrist raises. I have a horrible feeling i'll need a steroid injection.
Omg thank you. The crack in the toe seam was what I needed help with.
Nice. Gonna get me one first paycheck at ne job. For $159 and it meets with your approval. I know I can get her stupid sharp and get rid of the fake hamon. Dude. Get a 5000 grit red line belt. Sometimes you don't even need to strop.
You are a master! Thank you for sharing!!!
I accidentally left my bogu armor outside in a duffle bag outside for the night amd it ended up raining. The bag was slightly under roof and it ended up slightly wet. Barely. Im more worried about men and kote than anything else. It wasnt SOAKED but slightly wet. Bogu was bought sometime around May of this year (2023) How much damage am i looking at?
First order of business is to get everything thoroughly dried out. Then you can assess damage. Main location to keep an eye on is the leather band around the mengane. Also, in case you're not already doing this -- when you return home from practice, you should be taking the bogu out of the bag and letting it air out to dry.
@PaulHBShin It was raining heavily last night and today. Unfortunately I had to leave it drying indoors. The damage wasn't too bad. As soon as weather clears up I'll have it drying outdoors. Thank you for your advice. I will do just that when I get home from work. Again, thank you very much!
"You know your kote has become a biohazard when the smell is more powerful than your waza" 🤣 🤣 🤣
Thanks for the video. Clear and concise.
Those loops look great. As a beginner, this is what I was really worried about, so thank you.
Thank you soo much sir!
Thanks
Never throw away a shinai. With a cane tip and bicycle slip-on handlebar grip, they make excellent walking sticks (canes). That is mines only purpose (and self defense if needed. ii practice). Use fishing-rod handle gripping heat-shrink instead of thread & leather.
Where can i buy a real made katana? Not a factory made one
Why is this so hard to follow
what is the name of the tool you use to file your shinai down?
You can find it at most kendogu stores. Like this: www.e-bogu.com/Shinai-Fix-Tool-Bottle-Opener-Shape-p/hir-ken-shi-shfixtool-.htm
Your video made me actually go and clean my "Wakizaki? ". I ordered the proper kit but added another little box for the oily cloth as you have. Like you say the little bottle of oil will last if I'm not throwing the cloth away. My blade is very old so I must look after it.
I removed the part where we hold but I can not put back
Do you mean you can't put back the tsuka leather because it's too tight?
I absolutely love japanese craftsmanship !!!!!
Thank you Mr Shin. 8 years later and your tutorial videos are still the best.
Would kinesiology tape do the trick?
I guess you could use kinesio tape, but would be overkill. Elastikon tape is much cheaper than kinesio tape.
I'm 33 years old and I do not know how to tie a bow. Shame
Do I push on the larger, raised bump or on the other side of the mekugi?
Not sure what you mean by the "larger, raised bump." Can you describe further?
such wise words, thank you
😮😮😮😮😍😍😍
lol@ smell more powerful than waza
It is sad that you stop making videos. Your explanitions were clear and the image was of quality. You were addressing topics that other kendo video are not talking about or not as well as you did. Thanks for those quality videos that I keep refering to for my group.
Looks like a gun assembly and disassembly...
Thank you Sensie San
Very good advice. I had a bad case of inflamed achilles last year from overtraining, The excentric excerzises and then taking the summer off did the trick. Now I'm back to my usual training but I still do the excerzises twicw a week for prevention!😊
